Should You Seal Concrete Before Winter?

Winter is the most demanding season for exterior concrete in this region, which is why protection is often discussed in autumn.
What freeze/thaw actually does
Concrete is porous. Water enters the pore structure, freezes, expands and pushes against the material from the inside. Repeat that cycle dozens of times per winter and the surface can start to flake, dust or spall.
Reducing how much water the surface takes in is the single most useful thing you can do about this mechanism.
The role of deicing salt
Salt lowers the freezing point of water, which means more freeze/thaw cycles at the surface, not fewer. Chloride exposure is a known stressor for concrete and masonry surfaces.
Salt that gets tracked into a garage and then dries on the floor is an easy exposure to overlook.
What protection can and cannot do
A protection system can reduce water absorption and make surfaces easier to clean. It does not make concrete waterproof, does not stop structural cracking, and does not eliminate the need for sensible winter maintenance.
- Clear drainage so meltwater runs off instead of pooling
- Rinse off salt residue when a mild day allows it
- Avoid metal-edged tools that gouge the surface
